Baby Brooke

It was Derby Day in Louisville, Kentucky, and I had the privilege of photographing this cute little newborn baby! Baby Brooke was such a joy to photograph! Once she was asleep she was so happy and content. She made the cutest little faces in her sleep too!! It’s always fun to photograph newborns; the noises, the expressions… and the baby smell… oh the smell of a baby is intoxicating! It’s kind of like puppy breath (Yes, I’m an odd ball that loves the smell of puppy breath).

Her mommy and daddy are obviously smitten with this adorable little bear! Thank you for letting me into your home to capture the beginning of this new life! Congratulations and I wish you all the best!

Project 52 Week 19

The first week of January, I embarked on a weekly project. To pick up my camera and take a picture. Sometimes as photographer, you get into a rut; you forget to see the beauty in the little things around you. My project 52 will be a way to give me a little lift, to challenge me and hopefully inspire me. It will be a way for me to try new things and really, just have fun! During this project, you will see children, nature, and a few random objects that have meaning to me at that moment. We’ll see if I make it to week 52.

Week 19
Summer hit full force this week! Hello 90degree weather! Whew! But, the strawberries are ready for eating!!

Week 18
This week I bought a knitting loom to make a couple newborn hats. My son loved the boy one so much he requested one of his own. And now he’s requesting one for his “friend” tiger.

While I love his smile, I also love ALL the faces he makes, serious, goofy, or smiley. This just happens to be his serious face. :)

My first newborn hats!

If you’ve read my bio, you know that one of my favorite aspects of being a photographer is my ability to integrate craft projects! I have been wanting to learn how to knit or crochet for a while, and I can do a basic stitch with knitting, but I have a long way to go before I figure out how to knit a hat…. especially without using any swear words. However, I recently heard of something called a “Knifty Knitter”. It’s a loom that you use to knit with. I watched a couple videos about it, talked to some friends, and finally decided to give it a go! I bought some cute yarn and decided to make my first newborn hat! I even made a pompom for it!! It was so simple and turned out so cute, I decided to go ahead and make another one! I did the boy newborn hat a little different and made a brim on it, and no pompom. I am really happy with how they both turned out! I cannot wait to use them on the next newborn I photograph!

April’s Showers…..

It’s time for spring cleaning! We’ve had a lot of rain lately in Louisville, KY. There were quite a few tornado warnings too, I had to stay on my toes! With (hopefully) all that “April” weather behind us, I took a walk around my moms house to photograph some of what the “April Showers’ brought.

One of my fondest memories growing up in my Kentucky home was the strawberry patch my parents had next to the garden. There is nothing like fresh fruit. Now, I have 2 dogs that like to destroy just about anything they can… so, my wonderful maman said she would grow a strawberry patch for me and my son! I can’t wait for the fruit to get red and juicy! In the mean time, here’s some photos of the strawberries growth, from a strawberry flower to the actual strawberry.

I also seem to have a weakness for weeds. I don’t know what kind of “weed” this is, and I don’t care. I love photographing nature. It is very soothing for me to get away from the chaos of the day and go see things from a new perspective.

Mother’s Day gift to myself

I realized the other day that my mom doesn’t have many portraits of just herself. So, with Mother’s Day fast approaching, May 8th for those who don’t know, I kidnapped my mom for a mini-session the other day. This was really just a gift to myself as I would love a portrait of my mom… as much as she loves receiving pictures of my children. She’s a beautiful woman who deserves to have portraits of herself. She’s already said she’ll be sending it to her mom in France. Honestly, there is nothing better than receiving a portrait of your child.

I hope to take family portraits when my sister comes to Kentucky for Mother’s Day. It has been a long time since my brother, sister and I have had professional pictures taken together. I’d say around 20 years. (Not including my wedding) I think we are well overdue for just some good old family portraits! So, keep an eye out and you may see the photographer go in front of the camera soon! While I’m more comfortable being the photographer, I am very excited about getting family portraits done.

I am always amazed by nature. My walk outside this week proved no different, I always seem to spot something beautiful and unique. This week, it was a cute little birds nest! I have no idea how a little bird can build such an intricate work of art. Living in Kentucky never ceases to amaze me. I am so happy to have survived the multiple tornado warnings in a week… and still find a bird built something strong enough to withstand the crazy Kentucky weather!

Why Custom Photography?

Why should you choose Custom Photography?

I constantly receive coupons and specials in my e-mail inbox for portraits at chain department stores, I’m sure you do too. But, there are many differences between Custom Photography and a Chain Studio, and it’s not all about price.

  • Studios are not focused on the customer. The reason why department stores started offering portraits is to lure the customers into the store to buy things. Some stores even have you walk through a maze to get to the portrait studio. Have you ever noticed WHERE it is located in the store? Normally, close to the children clothing, and you may have to walk past some high-end items like electronics or home decor too. (You are my only priority)
  • Chain Studios book in 20 minute increments. You are not their priority, they need to fit as many people in as possible and sessions run over and the lines get longer. When you arrive, it takes a while for someone to acknowledge you, you wait and wait. The studio is running behind. The customer in front of you is seeming to take forever to make up their mind. You’re still waiting. You had planned it perfectly for your children to be happy, fed, not tired… but you’re still waiting. Finally, it’s your turn. The photographer goes through their typical “rule book” poses, the same ones they used on the family before you. Your children are unhappy and at this point very “uncooperative”, but 20minutes is all you get. You go to the sales computer to see your portraits, and your photographer keeps trying to up-sell you. You brought in a coupon, but come to find out, if you want more than one pose, you will be paying for their a la carte prices. What? You didn’t read the fine print? In the end, you booked a 20 minute session, were there for 2 hours, and left either feeling jipped or unimportant. (You will never wait in a line, I typically book only one session per day)
  • Chain Studios don’t hire photographers. They hand a camera to a new hire, put it on auto, and show them a red dot to put the child on for optimal lighting. Typically, the “photographer” that works there doesn’t know anything about composition, lighting, or even their equipment, it is just a paycheck to them. At the end of they day they won’t remember your name, if they even learned it to begin with. (I am dedicated to photography, to growing, to capturing your family in the most natural way)
Basically, what custom photography boils down to is value. The value of the customer, the value of the experience, and the value of the final product. Do you want to be important and have timeless images you will cherish for a lifetime? I have been a patron of chain studios. I did it because I didn’t know of any other options! I’m here to tell you, there is another way! There is a way for your family and your portraits to be valued. A way for you to have an enjoyable experience, something you will cherish for a lifetime.

“What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience. Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of who is next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio.”

To find the answer to the question: “How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?” Go here: Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

Project 52 Week 16

The first week of January, I embarked on a weekly project. To pick up my camera and take a picture. My project 52 will be a way to give me a little lift, to challenge me and hopefully inspire me. It will be a way for me to try new things and really, just have fun! During this project, you will see children, nature, and a few random objects that have meaning to me at that moment. We’ll see if I make it to week 52.

This week I was out enjoying the beautiful Kentucky weather and checking out my fruit trees when I spotted this weird looking thing growing in the grass below. I have no words for what this is, it was a little spikey puff ball and was just odd, but so neat. I used reverse lens macro (RLM) for this photo; which means I took my lens off my camera and turned it around to use as a magnifying glass. I have no idea what this is, but I felt it’s uniqueness was worth for a spot on my weekly project wall.
